Equinor ASA (EQNR.OS) said Thursday that all of the company's 54
personnel in the Bahamas are now confirmed safe and accounted for
after Hurricane Dorian passed through the island, damaging the oil
major's South Riding Point oil storage and transshipment terminal
on Grand Bahama island.
The workers had been at the terminal up until the precautionary
shutdown on Aug. 31, but the company had struggled to confirm
everyone's safety due to difficult communications conditions.
Equinor said it has made an initial aerial assessment of its
facility and has found that the terminal has sustained damage, with
oil observed on the ground outside of the onshore tanks. It said it
is too early to indicate any volumes, but at this point there is no
evidence of any oil spill at sea.
The company has mobilized oil-spill response resources and they
will arrive at South Riding Point as soon as possible.
"While weather conditions on the island have improved, road
conditions and flooding continue to impact our ability to assess
the situation and the scope of damages to the terminal and its
surroundings," Equinor said.
In preparing for the hurricane, Equinor shut down operations of
the terminal at noon on Saturday Aug. 31. Personnel were given time
off to look after their families and secure their private homes.
The advice from local authorities to evacuate certain areas had
also been followed. None of Equinor's personnel were at the
terminal when the hurricane struck, it added.
