Vivendi SA's (VIV.FR) video-streaming service Dailymotion has been ordered to pay Mediaset SpA (MS.MI) 5.5 million euros ($6.2 million) for breaching copyright law, the Italian broadcaster said Monday.

A court in Rome found that Dailymotion illegally hosted 995 copyright-protected videos on its website without any authorization since 2006, Mediaset said.

The judge ruled that Dailymotion must pay EUR5,000 for each day the videos remain on the website, and the company must also pay around EUR100,000 in court expenses.

This is the first of seven trials involving Dailymotion and the total damages could reach more than EUR200 million, Mediaset said.

Mediaset said the outcome of the trial, which lasted more than six years, should help rebalance the relationship between content producers and online platforms.

Vivendi declined to comment on the matter, while Dailymotion didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
