TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) is “cautiously optimistic” about prospects for construction of its Keystone XL pipeline despite the denial of its preferred route through Nebraska, Alberta Premier Notley says in the first indication of the company’s possible stance following Monday’s announcement.

Yeah, that's true. But to be fair, the media is another business. It would be nice if people had some semblance of industry knowledge before they labeled a project as good or bad.

Well, getting off topic. Point is, this is more than good news about Keystone XL and I am excited to see how this shapes the industry.

Very little common sense these days in the media.

l_winthorpe l_winthorpe 6 years ago
I agree! I remember laughing to myself when listening to the arguments against Keystone XL. I thought to myself, "So, you [the protesters] would rather have old, outdated pipelines instead of a new, state of the art pipeline?"

To add to your point, the Keystone XL will not increase oil consumption, but rather make current consumption safer and less expensive to transport. Conveniently, I don't think I saw those points mentioned in the news.

benfrankledger benfrankledger 6 years ago
Funny thing is more and better infrastructure only help replace weak and risky infrastructure and more stability of supply we get the more we can loosen our addiction to oil.

l_winthorpe l_winthorpe 6 years ago
I saw that! I was waiting to hear what others said about it. The Keystone Pipeline XL has had such a crazy history, I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Though, my guess is that this will far from the last we hear for controversy.

$TRP - After nearly a decade, two presidential decisions, lawsuits and environmental protests, TransCanada (NYSE:TRP) will learn today whether it will receive the final state permit needed from Nebraska to build the Keystone XL pipeline.

The proposed 1,179-mile, $8B project will link Canada's oil sands to U.S. refineries and comes days after TransCanada's existing Keystone system spilled 5,000 barrels in South Dakota.

Ah ok, I understand what you mean now. I am excited to see the long term effects of shale on oil prices.
👍️0
benfrankledger benfrankledger 6 years ago
Would agree with that timeline or sooner. Already seeing some rebalancing occurring. My comment however was based on ability produce large new reserves when declines set in. Shale is the only one that can scale up fast.
👍️0
l_winthorpe l_winthorpe 6 years ago
So in 3 or so years, we will likely see under supply?
👍️0
benfrankledger benfrankledger 6 years ago
Primarily upstream in terms of proving and producing new reserves. Most projects to replace reserves take 3-10 years to come online. They are not being invested in largely due to low oil prices.
👍️0
l_winthorpe l_winthorpe 6 years ago
Are you talking about under investment across upstream, midstream, and downstream?
👍️0
benfrankledger benfrankledger 6 years ago
If you are talking about globally it will require terminal declines in reserves. Right now under Investment is setting us up for a hockey stick move in the coming years.
👍️0
l_winthorpe l_winthorpe 6 years ago
That's true. However, wouldn't it take some time to balance out? That was really my concern - how long until demand and supply balance each other out?
👍️0
benfrankledger benfrankledger 6 years ago
It’s possible. But the bottle necks are happening now so with more channels it will only balance over time would it not?
👍️0
l_winthorpe l_winthorpe 6 years ago
If this pipeline is approved, do you think it will have any effect on prices? It seems that a greater supply would lead to lower retail refined product prices. However, there is also the issue of bottle necking at refineries.

Canada's energy regulator eyes new rules as firms find bad pipeline parts

Canada's National Energy Board is expected to push for a shift in standards for pipeline parts after TransCanada (TRP +0.5%) and Enbridge (ENB +1%) discovered some that they were using had been substandard, Reuters reports.

The changes must pass external standards committees that include the pipeline industry and would change the way manufacturers have been designing parts, making production more complicated, according to the NEB's chief engineer.

TRP and ENB say they acted immediately and proactively after discovering the issues and that all their pipes were safe.

Environmental groups sue over Keystone pipeline approval
Six environmental groups file a lawsuit against the Trump administration in a Montana federal court to challenge its decision to approve construction of TransCanada's (TRP -0.6%) Keystone XL pipeline.
The groups say the U.S. State Department, which granted the permit needed for the pipeline to cross the Canadian border, relied on an "outdated and incomplete environmental impact statement" when making its decision earlier this month, violating the National Environmental Policy Act.
The lawsuit is the second filed this week against the Trump administration's recent energy-related moves, after environmental groups and Native American tribe sued for violating the Act in the lifting of a moratorium on coal leases on federal land.

Report: State Department to approve Keystone pipeline permit
The Trump administration will approve TransCanada's (TRP +1.1%) Keystone XL oil pipeline by Monday, reversing former Pres. Obama’s controversial decision, Politico reports.
The undersecretary for political affairs plans to sign the pipeline’s cross-border permit on or before Monday, the last day for the 60-day timeline that Pres. Donald Trump ordered in January, according to the report.
While the permit will eliminate a crucial barrier for the pipeline, other hurdles still remain, including winning approval for the project in Nebraska and from landowners there who have denied it the right of way.

Alaska Gov. Walker says he plans to recommend that the state buy out TransCanada's (TRP +2.3%) position in the major liquefied natural gas project Alaska is pursuing.

Walker estimates buyout costs would total ~$100M.

The other partners in the project are Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM), BP, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) and the Alaska Gasline Development Corp., which would hold the state's interest in liquefaction facilities.

No decision has been made yet on whether to build the project, which is in a phase of preliminary engineering and design.

Even though nearly half of TransCanada's (TRP -1.7%) proposed $12B Energy East crude oil pipeline runs through Ontario, the Ontario Energy Board says the project would result in only "modest" economic benefits for the province.

"Ontario consumers need to be assured that enough pipeline capacity and natural gas supply will be available to meet Ontario’s medium- and long-term needs, particularly in eastern Ontario," the OEB says in a new report.
